Hiking from Alcaucín to Nerja through Sedella, Cómpeta, Acebuchal, and Frigiliana is a journey through some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes in Andalusia, Spain. This route offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, charming white villages, and rich cultural heritage.
Starting in Alcaucín, nestled at the foothills of the Sierra Tejeda, the hike immediately immerses you in lush forests and rugged mountain terrain. The trail to Sedella takes you through serene paths bordered by aromatic pine and oak trees, with panoramic views of the La Maroma peak, the highest point in the province.
As you continue to Cómpeta, known as the “Cornice of the Costa del Sol,” the landscape transforms into terraced vineyards and olive groves. Cómpeta is famous for its sweet wine and vibrant festivals, and its narrow, winding streets are a delight to explore. The village offers breath-taking vistas over the Mediterranean Sea, making it a perfect rest stop.
The route from Cómpeta to Acebuchal, a once-abandoned village now lovingly restored, is particularly enchanting. The trail winds through the peaceful hills of the Almijara Natural Park, a haven for wildlife and wildflowers. Acebuchal’s rustic charm and tranquillity provide a stark contrast to the bustling coastal towns.
From Acebuchal, the path leads to Frigiliana, often celebrated as one of Spain’s most beautiful villages. Its Moorish architecture, whitewashed houses, and labyrinthine streets adorned with colourful flowers create a picturesque scene. The village’s rich history is palpable, with remnants of its Moorish past visible at every turn.
The final leg of the journey descends towards Nerja, a coastal gem known for its stunning beaches and the famous Nerja Caves, with their impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The descent offers magnificent views of the coastline, where the mountains meet the sea, creating a dramatic and breath-taking finale to the hike.
This hike is not just a journey through varied and stunning landscapes but also a cultural immersion, offering glimpses into the traditional Andalusian way of life. Each village along the route has its own unique charm and history, making the hike from Alcaucín to Nerja an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.
