Camino Espiritual del Sur – Guadix to Caravaca de la Cruz – Map
Driving distance: 52 Km
Sightseeing: Visit the cave district of Guadix
On the first day of our journey, we’ll whisk you away from Granada and set off for the enchanting town of Guadix, just an hour’s drive through the stunning prehistoric karst mountains. Guadix, affectionately known as Spain’s "cave town," is renowned for two extraordinary features.
The first is its incredible cave houses. Remarkably, nearly half of the town’s 20,000 residents still reside in these unique dwellings. The cave district, called Barrio Troglodyte, is found in Barrio Santiago, where around 4,000 caves serve as homes, forming the largest community of inhabited caves in all of Europe.
Hearing these tales, you're surely eager to experience this fascinating way of life for yourself. To kick off your adventure, we’ve arranged for your first night to be spent in a charming cave house, giving you an authentic taste of Guadix’s rich heritage. Afterward, we’ll venture to Face Retama, a site of immense geological significance located in eastern Guadix province. Recognized by UNESCO, this area holds one of the world’s most comprehensive continental geological records from the last five million years. It’s also a site of deep historical and religious significance, where Saint Torcuato, a disciple of Saint James and patron of the Accitana diocese, was martyred in the 1st century while spreading Christianity under Saint Peter’s guidance.
As the day winds down, Miguel will join you for dinner, where he’ll unveil the exciting itinerary for the next 13 days and share the remarkable story of his rediscovery of this ancient, million-year-old route, which he has presented to the world.
