 Embark on a captivating hiking journey through the Geo Park from Guadix to Castillejar, where the stunning landscapes of southern Spain unfold before you. Begin in Guadix, renowned for its troglodyte dwellings, and traverse the rugged terrain to Benalua, with its picturesque village charm. The hike continues to Gorafe, where you’ll explore the impressive prehistoric landscape of the Desert of Gorafe, including the striking Tras Face Retama area.

As you proceed to Bacor and Cortes de Baza, relish the serene beauty of rolling hills and ancient olive groves. In Castril, marvel at the dramatic rock formations and lush river valleys. Finally, walk along the pristine shores of Freila beach, where the tranquil waters and golden sands offer a perfect ending to your adventure. This diverse trail weaves together geological wonders, historical sites, and breathtaking natural beauty.

You’ll stay in the distinctive Cuevas La Chumbera, the enchanting Cuevas Algarves de Gorafe, the rustic Casa Rural Vico in Freila, the welcoming Cueva Abuela María, and the cozy Cueva Justo, culminating at Alojamiento en Castril.

DAY 1 GRANADA – GUADIX

We’ll pick you up in Granada and drive you to Guadix. Upon arriving at the hotel, our guide will provide a detailed overview of the upcoming hikes and information about the region, with a special focus on the Geo Park and its significance. And rest of the day spend to see the beautiful village by walking.

You'll be staying in a historic Cave house dating back to the eleventh century, offering stunning and impressive views of the old town of Guadix.

DAY 2 GUADIX – BENALUA (Tras Face Retama)

Starting in the historic town of Guadix, known for its cave dwellings and rich history, the trail quickly leads hikers into the rugged beauty of the Sierra de Baza. As you traverse this route, you'll experience a mix of arid terrains and lush areas, with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The hike is moderately challenging, featuring varied elevations and terrain that test both endurance and navigation skills. Along the way, you'll encounter unique geological formations and possibly spot local wildlife, making this hike a rewarding adventure for those who appreciate natural beauty and a bit of solitude.

Today, you’ll have the chance to experience something truly unique: a stay in an authentic cave. Cuevas la Chumbera, named after the chumbera plant that once thrived on this hillside in the 1950s, offers a memorable escape. At the age of 82, Francisco Urendes recalled how this plant adorned the landscape, with some still visible on the west façade of the caves. After a day of hiking, unwind and relax in the swimming pool, making the most of your unforgettable evening.

DAY 3: VILLANUEVA DE LAS TORRES - GORAFE

After breakfast, we'll transfer you from Benalua to Villanueva de las Torres, a 27 km journey by car. From there, we'll begin our 20 km hike to Gorafe. Along the way, you'll traverse scenic landscapes and ancient paths. Your adventure will culminate at the Algarves Caves of Gorafe, where you'll stay in unique bioclimatic cave houses carved into clay. These charming dwellings, meticulously restored in traditional style, are oriented south to capture natural light and maintain a comfortable temperature of 19 to 22°C year-round. Enjoy the perfect blend of outdoor exploration and cozy, eco-friendly accommodation in this fascinating part of Spain."

Starting in the ancient village of Gorafe, renowned for its prehistoric dolmens and dramatic scenery, the trail winds through rugged terrain, showcasing the area's unique geological features. As you hike, you'll traverse arid hills, dry riverbeds, and striking canyons, with occasional glimpses of the fertile valley below. The path leads to Bacor, a charming village perched atop a hill, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. This hike combines natural beauty with historical intrigue, making it a memorable experience for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

DAY 5: CANAL DEL JABALCON – CORTES DE BAZA

After breakfast, we will transfer you from Freila to Pico Del Jabalcón, a 19 km journey by road. On the way, we’ll take an hour-long break to enjoy the breathtaking views and explore the geological history of the Granada Geo Park.

Our adventure continues with a 21 km hike through the stunning Geo Park to Cortes de Baza. This scenic trek offers awe-inspiring views of rugged landscapes, ancient volcanic formations, and diverse flora and fauna. As you walk the trail, you'll delve into the rich geological history of the region, highlighted by dramatic rock formations and panoramic vistas. The hike takes you through a blend of rolling hills and rocky outcrops, culminating in the charming town of Cortes de Baza. Perfect for nature enthusiasts and geology buffs, this hike promises both a physical challenge and natural beauty.

In the evening, we'll stay once again in a cave house. Alcalá del Júcar, one of the most picturesque villages in Albacete, is a must-visit for lovers of rural tourism. You'll experience the unique charm of a traditional cave house, where original Arab architecture has been thoughtfully renovated to blend tradition with modern comforts.

It’s time to bid farewell to our fellow hikers and to wrap up our incredible journey through the Geo Park. It truly felt like stepping back in time and living in another era, especially with the unique opportunity to hike this path with someone who retraced it. As we part ways, we do so with the hope that our paths will cross again on another adventure in some other part of the world.
