This hike traces a route along restored pilgrimage paths between Gaudix and Caravaca de la Cruz, accommodating travel by foot, bicycle, motorized vehicles, or horseback. The journey spans across the regions of Gaudix, Baza, and Huescar in the Altiplano, and the northwest region of Murcia.
The route is divided into 14 stages, covering 318 kilometers of forest trails, agricultural paths, and, occasionally, asphalt. It traverses a variety of marked trails, particularly within the Granada Geopark.
Along the way, you’ll encounter significant sites related to the origins of Christianity in Spain, the early development of human civilization, and the historical border between the Nasrid Kingdom and Christian territories. This pilgrimage will lead you to Caravaca de la Cruz, one of Christianity’s key pilgrimage destinations.
The journey also offers an immersive experience in the Granada Geopark, renowned for its geological and cultural treasures. Pilgrims will witness unique geological formations, rich fossil records, and traces of early human settlement. Climate
The region has a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine and long daylight hours, even in winter. In spring and autumn, temperatures range from 8°C to 19°C, while summer temperatures can reach 22°C to 35°C, and often higher. At higher elevations, temperatures are slightly cooler. Rainfall is minimal. In winter, nights can be quite cold, with daytime temperatures averaging around 12°C.
Arrival and Departure info:
Your Bike and Hike Granada guide will meet you at Plaza Mariana Pienda or your hotel at 8:00 AM on Day 1 of your trip. The journey will conclude on the final day at 18:00 PM, with drop-off options at the airport, bus terminal, Hotel or Plaza Mariana Pienda.

Driving Distance: 53 Km
On the first day of our journey, we’ll depart from Granada for the charming town of Guadix, just an hour away through the scenic karst mountains. Known as Spain’s “cave town,” Guadix is famous for its unique cave houses, with nearly half of the town’s 20,000 residents living in these dwellings. The Barrio Troglodyte, home to around 4,000 caves, is the largest inhabited cave community in Europe.
To start your adventure, you’ll spend the night in a traditional cave house, experiencing Guadix’s rich heritage. The next stop is Face Retama, a UNESCO-recognized site of immense geological and historical importance, where Saint Torcuato was martyred. Miguel will join you for dinner, sharing the itinerary for the next 13 days and the fascinating story of his rediscovery of this ancient route.
Hiking Distance: 14 Km
Embark on an 14 km hike from Guadix to Benalúa through the Geo Park, where you’ll experience the charm of a Cave House nestled between Benalúa and Fonelas. This area offers stunning views, a sense of exclusivity, and ancient caves that add to the estate’s charm, providing the perfect setting to relax and connect with nature.
The La Chumbera Caves, named after the “chumbera” plant that once covered the hillside in the 1950s, are steeped in history. Francisco Urendes, at 82 years old, shared how this plant once spread across the hill, with remnants still visible on the caves’ west facade.
Hiking Distance: 11 Km
The 11 km hike from Benalúa to Fonelas takes you through diverse landscapes, from rolling hills to arid plains, offering stunning views and a chance to experience the region’s unique geology and wildlife. The trail ends in the village of Fonelas, where a vehicle will transport you back to your accommodation.
Tonight, you’ll stay in a bioclimatic cave house in the village of Gorafe, northeast of Granada. These clay-dug homes maintain a comfortable temperature year-round and are located near the region’s rich archaeological sites, including 198 dolmens across 10 necropolises.
Hiking Distance: 15 Km
After breakfast, we’ll transfer you from Gorafe to Alicun Spa, just 9 km away. The adventure begins with a 15 km hike in Gorafe, where nature and history blend together. The hike starts with a circular route around the scenic Toril area, followed by a hike to the historic village of Gorafe, offering stunning landscapes, panoramic views, and a peaceful atmosphere.
After the hike, we’ll return you to the Balneario de Alicún, where you’ll stay at the unique Cave Resort.

The 14 km hike from Gorafe to Bacor through the Geo Park takes you on a fascinating journey across Granada’s rugged, desert landscape. Starting in Gorafe, the trail meanders through striking badlands, ancient dolmens, and eroded cliffs, revealing millions of years of geological history. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views, narrow gorges, and the tranquil beauty of the Sierra de Baza. This moderately challenging route concludes in the charming village of Bacor, offering a rewarding experience in one of Andalusia’s most unique and untouched regions.
Hiking Distance: 16 Km
Embark on a 16 km hike from Freila to Baza, crossing beautiful landscapes and rugged terrain. The trail offers stunning panoramic views of the Andalusian countryside, making it a fulfilling journey for nature lovers. Upon reaching Baza, dive into local history at the Baza Archaeological Museum, home to artifacts from ancient Roman and Moorish civilizations. Finish your visit with a stop at CIYA, where you can savor the local culture and cuisine, enriching your experience of this charming Spanish region.
Hiking Distance: 12 Km
Today, we’ll drive from Baza to the base of Jabalcón Peak, taking in the breathtaking views and exploring the geological history of the Granada Geopark. Our adventure includes a 12-kilometer circular hike around the peak. Tonight, we’ll stay in a magnificent, century-old cave house.
Hiking Distance: 11 Km
After breakfast, we’ll transfer you from Baza to Jabalcón and then to Benamaurel. Along the way, enjoy a scenic 12 km hike through Spain’s rugged landscapes, offering stunning views of rolling hills and peaceful countryside. Upon reaching Benamaurel, a charming town with over 2,500 residents, you’ll discover its rich cultural heritage, including its vibrant Moors and Christians festivals honoring the Virgen de la Cabeza. The town’s historic charm makes it a perfect conclusion to your journey.
Hiking Distance: 14 Km
The 14 km hike from Orce to Galera takes you through Granada’s stunning landscapes. Starting in historic Orce, the trail winds through rolling hills, olive groves, and peaceful countryside, offering beautiful mountain views and ancient ruins. The hike ends in the charming village of Galera, where you can explore its narrow streets and enjoy a local café. This moderately challenging hike is ideal for those wanting to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region.
Hiking Distance: 12 Km
The 12 km hike from Galera to Huéscar takes you through the stunning Geoparque de Granada, a UNESCO Global Geopark rich in geological history. Starting in Galera, the trail passes ancient badlands, offering breathtaking views of eroded rock formations, prehistoric cave dwellings, and Roman ruins. The moderately challenging route ends in Huéscar, where you can explore medieval architecture and local culture.
After the hike, relax at a unique cave resort in Huéscar, nestled in the Altiplano of Granada, offering a peaceful and environmentally-friendly escape in a traditional cave house.

Embark on a scenic 16 km hike from the picturesque Ermita de Las Santas in Huescar to the charming village of Puebla de D. Fadrique. The trail takes you through diverse landscapes, offering panoramic views of the countryside and a peaceful immersion in nature. In the morning, you’ll be transferred back to Las Santas to begin your adventure, ensuring a smooth experience. This hike combines natural beauty with a touch of local culture, making it a memorable part of your journey.

The 17 km hike from Puebla de D. Fadrique to Almaciles takes you through the picturesque landscapes of southeastern Spain. Starting in the charming village of Puebla de D. Fadrique, the trail winds through rolling hills, olive groves, and rugged terrain, offering stunning mountain and valley views. The hike ends in the serene, historic village of Almaciles, blending natural beauty with cultural insights for a rewarding adventure.
Hiking Distance: 18 Km
Embark on an 18 km hike from Archivel to Caravaca de la Cruz, passing through scenic landscapes and peaceful trails. Upon reaching Caravaca, attend the Pilgrim’s Mass at the Basilica of the Vera Cruz for a spiritual experience. Afterward, explore the Basilica Museum to discover religious artifacts and learn about the history of this sacred site.
Driving Distance: 223 Km
It’s time to say goodbye to our fellow hikers and conclude our incredible journey through the Geo Park with Miguel. We know how hard it is to part ways after two weeks of exploring this historic route, which felt like stepping back in time. It was a unique experience, especially hiking alongside someone who retraced this path.
