A Land Steeped in History

This remarkable region has been a cradle of humanity since prehistoric times. From the earliest inhabitants to some of history’s most influential civilizations, the land bears the imprints of countless cultures. It offers a fascinating journey through the ages, encompassing the Bronze and Copper Ages, the Iberians, Romans, Muslims, and Christians.

At its heart lies the UNESCO-recognized Granada Geopark, a site of unparalleled historical and natural significance. Celebrated for its stunning landscapes and invaluable heritage, the Geopark is a destination to experience, protect, and share.

Renowned as one of the premier locations globally for studying the Quaternary period, the Geopark preserves Europe’s most exceptional open-air record of continental fossils from this era.

Visiting this extraordinary site is more than an exploration of nature—it’s an invitation to uncover the profound stories etched into the fabric of our planet’s history.

Reconnect with Nature: A Unique Historical Legacy

The cave houses of Andalusia are a testament to the region’s ingenuity and rich history, dating back to ancient times when early inhabitants carved homes into the soft, clay-rich hillsides. These dwellings were later perfected during the Moorish era, combining practicality with architectural charm.

Uniquely adapted to their environment, cave houses offer natural insulation, maintaining a cool interior in summer and warmth in winter. Their distinctive design blends seamlessly with the landscape, reflecting the harmonious relationship between human settlement and nature.

Today, these iconic homes stand as a symbol of Andalusia’s cultural heritage, offering visitors a rare glimpse into a sustainable and timeless way of living.

Climate

The region has a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine and long daylight hours, even in winter. In spring and autumn, temperatures range from 8°C to 19°C, while summer temperatures can reach 22°C to 35°C, and often higher. At higher elevations, temperatures are slightly cooler. Rainfall is minimal. In winter, nights can be quite cold, with daytime temperatures averaging around 12°C.

BICYCLE

We provide high-quality E- BIKES with pannier bags for carrying luggage, allowing the bike to take the weight rather than your shoulders. When booking, you indicate your height and weight to have the correct frame size of the bicycle at the start of your holiday.

Spanish bicycle regulations

Outside of metropolitan areas, all bikers of 16 years of age and younger must always wear helmets. There are exceptions for expert riders, difficult climbs, and during periods of extreme heat.

It is probably advisable to always wear a helmet because it seems that what constitutes a city core is debatable and subject to police judgement. (A fine of 200 euros is applicable if otherwise)

Similar to when a car’s lights would need to be turned on, reflective apparel and lights must be fitted and used in situations where they are important (necessary during tunnels, sunset to sunrise). Lights shouldn’t be necessary on your bicycle if you want to avoid riding at night on the Camino.

Hands-free Bluetooth and headphones, even in one ear, are forbidden. (Fine of €190 imposed)

It is not permitted to travel on free or toll highways. Unless otherwise indicated by a sign, cyclists older than 14 may ride on the shoulder of a toll-free highway.

Running a stop sign or a traffic signal, driving while intoxicated, etc. are all offences that carry fines similar to those for driving.

Driving Distance: 55 Km
We’ll begin the day with a pickup from Granada, then drive to Guadix, where you’ll check into your hotel. After settling in, enjoy a brief sightseeing tour. You’ll have time to relax or explore the scenic surroundings before the tour leader provides an orientation on the upcoming 6 days of riding, covering safety and bike instructions.
In the evening, unwind at a charming Cave house, offering stunning views of Guadix’s old town. This historic yet tranquil setting is the perfect base to explore the city’s blend of ancient history and modern comfort.

Leaving Guadix, we enter the Badlands, a unique landscape formed over a million years as an ancient lake drained away. In Benalúa, enjoy breathtaking viewpoints over the Fardes River valley.

Next, we visit Face Retama, a site of Christian significance where Saint Torcuato, martyred by the Romans, is believed to have preached in the Iberian Peninsula. The area also features caves that may have served as a Paleo-Christian hermitage dating back to the 4th century.

We continue to the Nazarí tower in Guajar, offering stunning views of the Sierra Nevada and once guarding the border with Christian kingdoms. After crossing desert Ramblas, we reach the Alicún Spa, famous for its ancient geological formations and healing mineral waters, inhabited since Neolithic times.

Our journey concludes in Gorafe, a desert town with a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations.

Cycling Distance: 49 Km

This challenging stage takes us through gravel paths deep into the Gorafe desert, exploring the striking Colorados area, which mirrors the rugged beauty of the Colorado Desert. Along the way, we’ll discover fascinating geological formations.

We’ll continue through the desert to the Bacor Oasis, a town known for its cave network, including the unique Black Cat Museum, a cave-museum created by a local artist.

The ride ends in Freila, a historic town once on the border of the Muslim Kingdom of Granada, where we’ll enjoy a stunning sunset.

Cycling Distance: 43 Km

We’ll begin our journey in Freila, riding gravel roads before reaching the pavement and heading toward Zújar. From there, we’ll prepare to ascend Jabalcón Peak, the heart of the Granada Geopark. The summit offers panoramic views, with a special focus on the Negratín Reservoir, showcasing millions of years of geological history.

After descending Jabalcón, we’ll circle the peak and approach the Negratín Reservoir, crossing it and entering steppe-like terrain toward Benamaurel. Here, we’ll explore the ancient Hafas de Benamaurel caves, dating back to the 11th century.

The tour continues with a visit to Benamaurel’s caves, followed by a stop at the First Settlers Interpretation Center in Orce, which highlights early human settlements in Europe. We’ll ride through the Iberian city of Tútugi and the Argaric settlement of Castellón Alto in Galera, finishing with a visit to Casa Penalva in Huéscar, immersing ourselves in local heritage.

The region is also known for its gastronomy, especially the Segureño lamb, a protected designation of origin.

Cycling Distance: 55 Km

Today’s journey takes us on a 55 km ride from Benamaurel to Orce, a historic European gem. Our destination is the First Settlers Interpretation Center, where we’ll explore the region’s fascinating history. In Orce, we’ll visit the Fuencaliente natural spring, just 2 km from the town center, offering a refreshing flow of water at a constant 18-20°C. Additionally, we’ll head to Cerro de la Virgen, 3 km from Orce, where ancient ruins reveal a walled village and burials spanning from 2,500 BC to the mid-17th century, offering a unique glimpse into the area’s diverse past.

Cycling Distance: 39 Km

Today’s 39 km ride from Orce to Huéscar follows the path of ancient civilizations that once inhabited this region.

We begin by visiting an archaeological site in Orce, where hominid remains over a million years old were found. Then, we continue to Galera, exploring the ancient city of Tútugi (circa 5th century BC) and its modern interpretation center. We’ll also visit the Castellón Alto site, an Argaric settlement with a history spanning millennia.
