When I close my eyes and think of my childhood, I see the sun spilling over the rolling hills of Granada, the olive groves stretching endlessly, and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains standing guard in the distance. I hear the rustle of the wind through almond blossoms, the crunch of earth under my shoes, and the laughter of family picnics by crystal-clear rivers. I was born and raised here, in the heart of Andalusia, and from the very beginning, nature has been my constant companion.
Growing up in this magical corner of Spain was a privilege, but it also came with a responsibility I would only understand later in life — the responsibility to protect and preserve it. My passion for exploring the world started here, in my hometown. Whether on two wheels or on foot, I found joy in discovering hidden corners, narrow trails, and quiet places that even many locals have never seen. This deep connection to my land is what eventually inspired me to create Bike and Hike Granada — a dream rooted in my heritage, shaped by my travels, and guided by my vision for a more sustainable world.
From Academia to Adventure
Before Bike and Hike Granada existed, my path was quite different. I worked at the University of Granada, a job that kept me engaged intellectually but left my heart longing for something more. Every holiday or weekend was a chance to escape into the wild — hiking in the mountains, cycling through vineyards, exploring coastlines, and connecting with fellow travelers from around the world.
Eventually, my curiosity and love for the natural environment took me far from home. I traveled extensively, always drawn to active tourism — a way of exploring that involves the body, mind, and spirit. I experienced how other regions and countries promoted their natural heritage while caring for the environment. These journeys were more than just personal adventures; they became lessons in what was possible when tourism was done right.
Somewhere along the way, I realized something important: I didn’t have to choose between my roots and my wanderlust. I could bring the world to my doorstep, inviting travelers to explore Andalusia in a way that respected its landscapes, empowered its people, and left a positive footprint.
The Birth of Bike and Hike Granada
In the post-COVID period, I realized I could no longer wait to connect active travelers with my beloved homeland of Andalusia. The pandemic had taught us all a powerful lesson about how easily we can exploit nature and the world around us — and how urgently we need to protect it. I knew that anyone coming to Andalusia should have the opportunity to explore it in the most sustainable way possible: on foot or by bicycle, leaving nothing but footprints and tire tracks on the path.
So, I took the leap. I left the security of academia to pursue a vision that had been quietly growing in my heart for years — to offer global active tourism travelers the chance to discover Andalusia’s off-the-beaten paths, the hidden treasures I have been exploring since childhood.
From the start, my mission was clear:
- To create unforgettable cycling and hiking experiences that showcase the natural and cultural beauty of Granada and Andalusia.
- To practice and promote sustainable tourism — reducing carbon emissions, preserving landscapes, and encouraging travelers to reconnect with nature.
- To empower women in travel by offering Women-Only Tours led entirely by a women crew, creating safe, inclusive, and inspiring spaces for women to explore together.
The idea was not just to offer tours, but to share stories, traditions, and the essence of Andalusia. Every route we design is carefully chosen to highlight both its beauty and its authenticity. Our guests don’t just see the famous landmarks — they walk through whitewashed villages, share a meal with locals, and hear the wind whisper through ancient olive groves.
Why Sustainability Matters to Me
Sustainable tourism is not just a marketing word for us; it is at the heart of everything we do. Andalusia is a region of extraordinary biodiversity — from the wetlands that shelter migratory birds to the rugged peaks of Sierra Nevada. But like so many beautiful places in the world, it is fragile. Over-tourism, pollution, and climate change threaten these landscapes.
At Bike and Hike Granada, we make conscious choices every day to protect this heritage:
- Using bicycles and walking as our primary means of travel during tours to minimize carbon emissions.
- Partnering with local businesses and guides to ensure tourism benefits the community directly.
- Limiting group sizes to reduce environmental impact and ensure authentic experiences.
- Encouraging eco-friendly practices among our guests, from reusable bottles to waste reduction.
I believe that when people experience nature in a mindful way, they become its best defenders. My hope is that every traveler who joins us leaves not just with beautiful memories, but with a renewed commitment to protecting our planet.
The Women-Only Tours – My Personal Passion
As a woman entrepreneur in the travel industry, I know the unique challenges and joys of traveling as a woman. Some women hesitate to join outdoor adventures because they worry about safety, comfort, or feeling out of place. That’s why I launched Women-Only Tours — adventures designed by women, led by women, and for women.
These tours create a space where women can explore without hesitation, share their stories, and build friendships with like-minded travelers from around the world. The feedback has been inspiring — many women tell me they gained not only new experiences but also new confidence.
The all-women crew brings an extra layer of connection and understanding. We laugh together, push each other up steep climbs, share picnics under the shade of cork trees, and celebrate each milestone along the way. For me, this is more than a tour — it’s a community.
What Makes Granada and Andalusia Special
For those who have never been here, Andalusia is a sensory feast. The air is scented with orange blossoms in spring. The light has a golden warmth that seems to slow time itself. You can hear the distant strum of a flamenco guitar in the plaza, taste the sweetness of fresh figs in summer, and feel history beneath your feet in every cobblestone street.
Granada, my hometown, is a city of contrasts — the majestic Alhambra rising against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada, the winding alleys of the Albaicín, and the lively tapas culture that brings people together every evening.
But beyond the city, Andalusia opens up into landscapes that few travelers ever see — quiet mountain passes, hidden waterfalls, UNESCO Geo Park, Europe’s only Desert Gorafe, Pre-historic sights, Cave dwellings in Guadix, mesmerizing Las Alpujarras, centuries-old irrigation channels, and cliffside villages where life moves at a gentler pace. These are the places I love to share, the ones that truly make travelers feel like they’ve stepped into another world.
Building a Legacy of Adventure and Respect
When I started Bike and Hike Granada, I knew I wasn’t just starting a business; I was starting a movement. I wanted to prove that tourism could be adventurous, meaningful, and responsible all at once. Every day, I see that it can.
Our tours are not rushed. We move at a pace that allows for deep connection — to nature, to culture, and to each other. I’ve watched strangers become lifelong friends on the trails. I’ve seen travelers moved to tears by the beauty of a sunrise over the Las Alpujarras. I’ve heard the quiet joy in someone’s voice as they realize they are capable of more than they imagined, whether that’s cycling up a challenging hill or completing their first multi-day hike.
This is the real reward — not just showing people my homeland, but helping them discover something within themselves.
Looking Ahead
My vision for the future of Bike and Hike Granada is clear:
- To expand our network of sustainable routes, bringing travelers to even more undiscovered corners of Andalusia.
- To strengthen our partnerships with local artisans, farmers, and guides, ensuring that tourism supports the economy at every level.
- To inspire more women to travel actively and confidently, building on the success of our Women-Only Tours.
- To continue advocating for a tourism industry that respects the environment and enriches communities.
And, above all, to keep the spirit of exploration alive — because the world needs curious, mindful travelers now more than ever.
An Invitation
To every traveler reading this, I want to extend a personal invitation: come and experience Andalusia the way I know it — not just as a destination, but as a living, breathing place full of history, stories, flavors, and beauty.
Whether you join us on a cycling adventure through olive country, a hike to a hidden mountain village, or a Women-Only journey that feeds your soul, I promise you will leave with more than just photographs. You will leave with a piece of Andalusia in your heart, and perhaps a deeper connection to the natural world and to yourself.
This is my home. It shaped me into the woman I am today — an explorer, a protector of nature, and a believer in the power of travel to change lives. I cannot wait to share it with you.
